Silk House


The structural design for this $8 million seven-storey building involved many challenges, each of which were resolved through MPC’s experience with similar multi-storey developments. The design incorporated a steel support structure for and existing heritage-listed masonry façade, lateral support of basement excavations for adjacent buildings, hydrostatic uplift design of the basement floor slab, and wind and earthquake load analysis of the building. Each floor was constructed as a post-tensioned concrete floor slab supported on concrete columns and walls. The adventurous architectural arrangement of columns, walls, and mezzanine floors within the building required careful detailing of concrete elements.
