MPC provided structural engineering inspection, analysis, design and site supervision services for the restoration of the historic Newcastle Ocean Baths pavilion, for Newcastle City Council (NCC). The extremely dilapidated reinforced concrete structure required extensive replacement of reinforcement and concrete, as well as the installation of an impressed current cathodic protection system (to prevent the reinforcement from further corrosion). The augmentation works included new building foundations, new floor slabs on ground, new awning framing (acting as a bracing system for the high building facades), and new shear walls (to meet the current Australian Standard earthquake and wind load requirements). The structural analysis of the existing heritage-listed building was conducted by MPC. MPC then provided the subsequent design and documentation of the structural components of the required strengthening works, and assisted NCC with inspections and supervision during construction of the restorations.
