MPC were engaged by Hansen Yuncken Ptd Ltd to carry out full structural design and documentation for the $12m airport expansion that effectively doubled the size of the existing airport. The new extension allows for international services and includes new departures lounge and full redevelopment of the tenancies and amenities. MPC provided a structural engineering design solution that allowed the foundations to be cast directly over the existing airport tarmac, introducing significant construction cost and program efficiencies. The first floor slab was constructed before the ground floor slab to allow for speed of construction and for construction works to have all weather access at an early stage. Post tension concrete slab solutions were used for the first floor to limit slab and beam depths required to facilitate services and maximize ceiling heights. The ground floor slab used the “Ultrafloor” precast floor system to allow for full subfloor access to allow for access to all services for future expansions. MPC’s documentation included a full 3D “Revit” model of the structural elements of the building.
