The Newcastle Port Corporation commissioned the redevelopment of the existing workshop site located adjacent Newcastle Harbour at Dyke Point, Carrington. The workshop was originally constructed in 1942 and was used as a ship building facility and engineering workshops. Much of the original construction included lead-based paints and asbestos cladding, all of which presented challenges for the proposed redevelopment. The redeveloped workshop, approximately 160m long, 57m wide and up to 23m high, was proposed to be converted into a super yacht building facility, to be used by Azzura Marine. MPC conducted an investigation and analysis of the existing structure and provided detailed advice regarding the structural stability of the modified workshop arrangement, the replacement of damaged or corroded structural elements, the safe demolition of various unused frames, and the ongoing protection of the structural building fabric.
