David Cohen & Co, Bolton Street Car Park

MPC were engaged by Newcastle City Council to conduct a structural engineering investigation of the structural integrity of the heritage masonry façade of this building. The façade masonry, which was structurally tied to a concrete framed multi-storey car park behind, was originally part of the David Cohen & Co. heritage-listed building and due to its age and proximity from the coast, contained extensive defects.

MPC’s investigation process included close-up inspection of the heritage façade masonry using an elevated work platform and traffic management controls, structural analysis of the façade, design of repairs to the heritage masonry defects, and design of a structural strengthening system incorporating additional steel framing to the internal face of the masonry.

The documents produced by MPC included detailed building elevations showing locations of specific heritage masonry repair works, schedules of repair work requirements (including approximations of quantities for each defect for tendering purposes), repair method specifications, and structural drawings of major building strengthening works.
