MPC were contracted by Cessnock City Council to undertake the structural and civil design, documentation and site phase services for this $8 million project. The project included the remediation and modifications of existing heritage buildings, plus the construction of a new performance facility. Construction included the incorporation of a new precast and structural steel framed building between two existing structures, where heritage facades and portions of the existing buildings were required to be maintained. New stage and tiered seating facilities were also provided for the performance area of the development. Significant site constraint were accounted for in the design and construction of the development including building over an existing open stormwater drainage channel, high flood levels requiring raising of existing building floor levels, coal mines being located directly beneath the site and soft soils zones requiring suspended ground slabs to be incorporated. The existing structures were also required to be stabilized and upgraded to comply with local earthquake code requirements.
