The $100million Arena development located off Shortland Esplanade and overlooking Newcastle Beach incorporates up to 16 storeys of residential apartments, 3 levels of basement car parking, plus restaurant and function facilities. MPC was engaged by the developer, Stronach Property, to provide the structural and civil engineering designs for the development. The building incorporates two concrete framed towers with post-tensioned concrete floor slab systems, podium and transfer slabs and beams. MPC conducted a dynamic wind and earthquake analysis of the building frame which accounted for client’s proposal to construct the towers in separate discrete stages yet which were to be connected in the final configuration. DWP Suters Architects provided the architectural design for the development. MPC and DWP Suters successfully engaged in an extensive and ongoing process of coordination of structural requirements with the architectural arrangement, which was regularly adjusting to suit the changing needs of the project and the client. This development is located in an area of Newcastle that contains convict mine workings and coal seams which will be uncovered during basement excavations. The development site also has a ground fault line passing directly under the main tower for which foundation design depths, excavation, wall restraint and groundwater issues were deemed critically important during the design process.
